Jean-René Fourtou has been the Chairman of the Supervisory Board of Vivendi since 2005.
He was born in 1939 in Libourne, France and is a graduate of Ecole Polytechnique in Paris.
Jean-René Fourtou started his career as a Consulting engineer in organizational management at Bossard & Michel in 1963. In 1972, he was appointed Chief Executive Officer of Bossard Consultants. In 1977, he became Chairman and CEO of the Bossard Group. From 1986 to 1999, he was Chairman and CEO of Rhône-Poulenc Group.
In 1999, he was appointed Vice Chairman of the Management Board and Managing Director of Aventis (created by the merge of Hoechst and Rhône-Poulenc). From 2002 to 2005 he was Chairman and CEO of Vivendi Universal.
Today, Jean-René Fortou is Chairman of Bordeaux University Foundation - France, Board Member of Sanofi-Aventis - France and Board Member of Maroc Télécom - Morocco.
Jean-René Fourtou has been the Chairman of many professional associations and is presently Honorary Chairman of the International Chamber of Commerce.
Fortou was elected European Businessman of the Year by the American Forbes magazine and received the International Leadership Award from the United States Council for International Business.
Besides the many awards he received over the years, he was decorated internationally by:
- Officer of the Legion of Honour (France)
- Commander of the National Order of Merit (France)
- Ouissam Alaouite of the Order of Commander (Morocco)
- Ouissam al Moukafaa al Watanya of the Order of Commander (Morocco)
His entrepreneurial spirit is reflected in the book he co-authored: «La Passion d'Entreprendre».
